The city of Ciego de Ávila was founded in 1840 in lands having the same name 300 years ago. One of the meanings of the word ‘’ciego’’ is ‘’fertile and plain ground surrounded by forests’’, this, together with the name ‘’Ávila’’of its first landowner, made the peasants call the region as Ciego de Ávila, whose name lasts until present time. The prosperity arrives to the zone with the Independence War, at the expenses of a Spanish defensive project called the Trocha (path), afterwards the area became a municioality. The regular layout of its streets places in the Historical Center the Martí Park, which is surrounded by buildings with colonnades of neoclassic style and large corridors giving to the locality the name of ‘’City of Portals’’.
